THE CHAIRMAN AND SPECIAL ENVOY
Dr. Carol Jacobs, BCH, was selected to serve as Chairman of the National HIV/AIDS
Commission and Special Envoy to the Prime Minister on HIV/AIDS related matters.
Working as a HIV/AIDS advocate for the past fourteen years, she chaired
the National Advisory Committee on AIDS (NACA) from 1995 until 1998.
It was during her tenure as Chairman of NACA that a member from the
community of HIV+ persons was invited to serve as member of the Committee.
COMMISSION MEMBERS
Dr. Jacobs chairs a sixteen-member National HIV/AIDS Commission which comprises
representatives from the following:
- Faith-based organisations
- Medical profession including the Barbados Registered Nurses Association
- Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs)
- The community of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA)
- The Media
- The Private Sector
- The Trade Unions
- Youth Organisations
Dr. Timothy Roach, Head of the AIDS Management Team at the Queen Elizabeth
Hospital is the Deputy Chairman of the Commission. Dr. Beverley Miller,
Chief Medical Office, Professor the Hon. Errol Walrond and Dr. Nicholas
Adomakoh serve as medical experts on the Commission.
- To advise government on HIV/AIDS/STDs policy;
- To advocate for the effective involvement of all sectors and organisations
in implementing programmes and strategies;
- To monitor the implementation of the Strategic Plan in all sectors of society;
- To create and strengthen partnerships for an expanded response among
all sectors;
- To mobilize resources (internationally and locally) for the implementation
of the National HIV/AIDS programme;
- To recommend appropriate research.
